Q: What do I need to have when I apply to the Pipe Trades Apprentice Program?
A: You only need to have a high school diploma or GED, your birth certificate, a driver's license and your Social Security Card or number.

Q: Do I need past experience in this trade before applying to the Program?
A: You don't need any past experience in plumbing or pipefitting to get into the Program. If you do have past experience, that is obviously helpful to you as you apply.

Q: How long does the Program take to complete?
A: The Pipe Trades Apprentice Program takes five years to complete, at which point you become a certified, skilled journeyman.

Q: How do I advance in the Program?
A: You advance in the Program by completing instructional hours and on the job training. The Program requires a total of 246 hours in the classroom and 1,750 hours in the field each year.

Q: I've heard the terms Apprentice and Helper used when people describe the entry levels for this kind of work … are they the same?
A: An Apprentice is a position that is a formal part of the Program that leads to a certified career as a journeyman. A position as a Helper represents a job/title that is not part of the Program and does not lead to a journeyman certification.

Q: Where would I attend school during the Program?
A: You attend classes two nights a week, and there are several places those classes are held. You can currently attend at any of the locations listed below, and other locations in both North Carolina and South Carolina are being evaluated for possible use in the future:

Laurens, SC Training Center
Charleston, SC Southeast Regional Training Center

Q: Do I need to purchase special books for the Program?
A: You don't need to purchase books for the Program, as we will supply those to you at no charge for use during your course of study. If you do not return your books, you will have to purchase them.

Q: Do I need to purchase any tools for the Program?
A: There are only three tools that you will need to purchase for the Program and they will cost you approximately $50. The three tools are: Torpedo Level, Channel Locks and a 25' steel measuring tape. All other tools used in the Program will be provided for your use at no charge.

Q: Who will my instructors in the Program be?
A: Your instructors will always be certified, skilled journeymen from the field, so that you can benefit directly from their hands-on experience.

Q: Do I have to go to college to graduate from the Apprentice Program?
A: You can graduate from the Program without going to college or taking additional courses.

Q: How many different specialties or tracks are there in the Program?
A: There are three different core tracks in the Pipe Trades Apprentice Program, including Plumbing, Pipefitting and HVAC/Refrigeration,. You can choose to specialize in HVAC/Refrigeration starting in your first year, and you choose between Plumbing and Pipefitting specialties after completing your second year in the Program.

Q: If I choose to, can I get my Associates Degree in Construction Project Management through the Program?
A: If you want to go into Construction Project Management, you can build on your Pipe Trades Apprentice Program and earn an Associates Degree by taking additional Math and English courses at one of the many Community Colleges that sponsor our Program in your area, or through Washtenaw Community College online.
